December 2007
It has
been a very busy year this year. My full time job is of
most concern because my brother and I purchased the
family business. I have also been busy with the call
making and I will have the new calls finished for 2007
late this year. I made myself a promise to make a
different color every year, but this year I am running a
little behind. It doesn’t really matter since I have
other calls for sale. This years color is neon green and
they look great. I have also been working on more guts
for the goose calls. I have several sets of guts
completed and I will have more by January of 2008. Here
is a list of a few things coming from the Goose Guts –
soft calling, loud calling, deep calling, competition
calling, worn in guts and 2 more that I will not mention
until it’s time. I will be offering guts to other Call
Makers no later than June of 2008.
I just
aired on the Jim Strader radio show on December 9th. I
had a very good time on the show and the 2 hrs went
quickly for me. If anyone would like to ask a question
about anything from the show, just call or send an
email. I did get a little interrupted while on the show
when Jim asked me about kids. I have a step son Scott
(28), and my other 2 sons Zac (15) and Chandler (8). I
can never forget my beautiful wife Cindy. We have been
married almost 16 yrs. You can listen to the show at
www.whas.com keyword Strader.
I also
need to mention that Dynamic Decoys have pulled me in
this year on their ProStaff. I have done a few things
with them, including doing the Waterfowl Weekend
representing them at the Sportsman’s Warehouse in
Lexington, KY. By the way, if you haven’t been to a
Sportsman’s Warehouse – you are missing out on a great
place to shop for hunting. Dynamic Decoys have great
products for motion in your decoy spreads. They also
have items for Turkey, Deer and Coyote hunting.

Another
mention needs to go to Dakota Decoys. I have been
watching this company since I first heard about them
early this year. I was one of the first to purchase
decoys from them when they opened for business. They are
a Great Company that will be an icon in the decoy world.
The Full Body Goose decoys are the absolute ticket in my
book and I currently hunt over 3 dozen right now. The
motion system is the best around and it even locks into
itself for holding the decoy still on those super windy
hunts. I am seeing that the paint is holding up very
well along with an easy teardown coming out of the
trailer and going back in. Bottom Line – They are GREAT
people with a GREAT product that you can expect more
from them in the near future.

2007
Early
Goose is almost here. We are looking forward to it
around here. We had a very good hatch of Local birds
this year.
I have
been working on 2 new calls this year and I will
announce them here soon. I will have more to announce
than just the sounds, because I will be telling you
about a good friend of mine.
I did
not update my sound files as promised, but I could not
find the time. I do things in order of need. The sound
files were not #1 priority on my list.
What
has been #1 on my list is to be known as a True Call
Maker. Thanks to all my hard work and everyone that
visits my site to browse or purchase the calls –
Wingtipsdown shows up #1 on Google. If you search
“custom goose call” with the google search engine – I am
first on the list. Something I am very proud of. A BIG
“THANK YOU” to everyone. The Calls that I make myself,
will never be sold in stores. All calls are laser
engraved and numbered. They will be a collectable down
the road and your “go to” call in the field.
I guess
all Calls should have a name, and I am naming the sounds
of my calls.
Here
are the Acrylic Goose Call Names:
Local Mash - Any note that you want to make, but
this call is not much louder than a live goose. This is
the perfect (all around) call for finishing geese,
hunting local/resident geese, or working wary birds into
your spread. The gut system in this call has a reed that
will last a lifetime. This is the most reliable reed in
a call.
Low
Boy - reach out and talk to them with 100% pure
goose. Sound like the older mature bird with these
deeper sounds. This call is very similar to a wood call,
but will last for ages.
Tall
Boy - reach out and really get their attention,
while also talking to them with the sweet stuff. This
call has the loud crack to get any birds attention at a
long distance, but can also tune down to sweet talk them
right into your spread. If you are landing big groups
and need to get your call sound to them, then this is
the call.
I have
to tell you something about this call name. This was the
reason I got into call making. My Brother John passed
away and I started making calls just after that. I knew
I would end up putting names with the call sounds and
this sound is named after John. He was 6’11” (Tall Boy).
Next year will be a special year for me and the color
will be “Yellow” in Memory of him. I’ll mention more
about this next year.
Nitro - super fast and aggressive talking anytime
you need it – a little higher pitched. This call can
take lots of pressure to get loud when needed, or you
can use less and still be fast with less volume.
I will
add the new sound files when I add the new names to the
site. It will be easier to pick a call by the name and
then pick the color that you want. You are more than
welcome to reference a call you are ordering by using 1
of these names. I will know exactly what you are talking
about.
I have
perfected my goose guts. My guts will never change
again. I may start selling to other Call Makers’ but I
haven’t made up my mind to do so yet. It took me 3½
years of Call Making to get the guts just the way I
wanted them. I have (1) more set of guts in the works,
but they will not show up in my calls for another year.
I am
now giving away another call
– good luck and Thanks for supporting WINGTIPSDOWN.
Take
tons of pictures in the field, and smash’em when you
can…
